Climbing Silver Peak
... With a Canoe
??
Yes, you read correctly. July 2007
marked the world's first ascent of Silver Peak
while portaging a canoe (at least we don't know of
anyone else who has contemplated, let alone
achieved this feat).
Glen McLaughlin and Blair Menard trekked,
in their own words, "an honest 10 mile (16
km) day trip/hike - especially when we missed a
marker and ended up on the wrong mountain top
(with pictures to prove it), thus requiring us to
double back to get to the proper destination -
Silver Peak - likely one of the park's most
difficult canoe portages."
When asked the obvious question "Why?" by
Killarney Outfitters Manager and Assistant Manager
Jenn Dryden and Meighan Artkin, Glen explained
that "I
had been thinking about this for no-less than 5
years. Friends have learned
firsthand I like to bring out the best in people.
I've also been known to set 'stretch goals' for
myself, and with the best intentions, motivate
others to participate."
Glen and Blair certainly stretched
themselves last month. After negotiating
with Jenn and Meighan for a
weathered-but-lightweight canoe, the two
adventurers set out.
On Friday, the 13th of July, they conquered
the Peak, Ontario's fourth highest at 539
metres. Glen is pictured here with their
canoe - on top of the world and happy to inspire
other intrepid travelers to push their limits!
